You are probably here because you or a loved one has cancer and you have questions. Have you found that many cancer information sites have a specific agenda or are trying to sell you something you don’t want or need or worse might be horrible for you?
I am Lyn and my wonderful partner’s name is Eric. He is known by all for his “Life is Good” attitude. Eric has Stage 4 prostate cancer. Not many days pass without someone sending us the latest “bullshit cures” but we are finally getting to the point where we can almost laugh about it as we sort through the myriad of “oh don’t we wish” cures.
Have you felt upset and angry when on top of dealing with the diagnosis well meaning friends offer
unproven “cures” while you are already confused and afraid?
In the crash of 2008 my “Life is Good” partner and I realized that our small businesses weren’t going to survive the economic downturn and neither would we if we continued to hang in there. He was a contractor and I was a Real Estate Salesperson when our self employed selves became unemployed! No doubt with facing cancer you, like us, have had to make critical decisions and changes to your life plan. We sold or gave away everything, packed up and moved to the Republic of Panama, Central America. We had a piece of land which was part of our retirement plan.
Filled with hope and armed with a really strong positive relationship we started our journey hopefully looking forward to the opportunity to learn to speak Spanish and experience a new culture. With cheap rent, plenty of affordable fresh fruits and vegetables and our very own piece of beautiful jungle to care for, what could go wrong?
Then during a routine colonoscopy in 2009, one year after we moved, Eric was diagnosed with colorectal cancer for the first time. After the Dr. mistakenly removed a tumor which he believed not to be cancer we were then referred to a specialist. By now we were not feeling very confident in the Dr. You have probably also had times when you wondered if they really could help? Is this Dr. good enough? We went to Panama City as advised to see a specialist.
Have you ever wondered if t you can trust your Dr?
Have you heard that Dr.s are involved in a big conspiracy to keep us ill?
It seems impossible to me that this cancer journey all started so many years ago. That is also when some of the well meaning friends we knew started sending links and sharing information on unproven natural cures for cancer. I expect you have had friends who love you and want to reach out and help. Everyone wants to be the hero who sends you the right “cure” from the Internet. We tried juicing, exercise, no fat no carb diets, coffee enemas and much more. Sound familiar? The results weren’t good.Unfortunately there was no scientific way to measure results other than another colonoscopy and the cancer lived on.
We considered everything under the sun. I researched until I eyes went blurry at night while he was sleeping looking for answers. We wanted a magic cure. Sometimes our bullshit meter didn’t work very well and I can’t believe some of the things we tried! Can you relate? Our defenses were so low that we wasted a lot of valuable time and resources exploring alternative cures. which just turned out to be alternatives to medicine with no scientific basis. Some of them sounded so believable.
I am embarrassed to tell you we actually tried “Rife type” energy machine. Yes it was recommended by a friend who had survived cancer, said it worked for him so we actually tried it. Um.m.m……Everything is energy…. so why not dial up some healing? This little gadget set us back $3500. With this “cure” we decided to give it 3 months and then if we couldn’t be sure it was working we would go with traditional medicine.
We were still hoping for a good alternative to all the possible toxic chemo treatments. Once again there was no way to test this but to have a colonoscopy again so we were back to traditional medicine and a Dr. visit.
I am sure you have experienced the crazy frustration of not knowing the right answers when faced with this life and death decisions?
I know we have and we certainly know about feeling inadequate!
We really needed a better plan so I researched until I found a teaching hospital that takes charity patients and we got accepted at Shands Teaching Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. Laparoscopic surgery all went well and a few years passed comfortably with us more or less resuming our life in Panama and boom! Eric became really ill in April of 2017, Panama doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong and so we came back to Florida for answers.
The Doctors in Panama had failed to properly diagnose him for months and by the time we returned to Florida he had enough drugs, vitamins and supplements to fill a suitcase. Immediately we went to check on the colorectal cancer . The new colonoscopy came back clear so no colon cancer. Since we didn’t have a primary care Dr. involved they sent us on our way. No blood work was ordered. and he was still getting sicker by the day.
We still had no insurance and we were living on very little income, Eric was not old enough for medicare. Finally we found a community clinic that serves older patients without insurance for a small fee and we saw an amazing Physicians Assistant. After the blood tests were completed she told us she was sure it was prostate cancer. What? Where did that come from?
We drove back to the Hospital in Gainesville, Florida 6 hours away to once again look for answers. With no place to live and a definite need to stay in the US to get treatment we were facing a huge emotional and financial challenge. I reached out on Facebook and some wonderful friends offered us an amazing place to stay which solved one of our big problems. Whew!
Now to get treatment and money to live on. In April of 2017 we returned to Panama and once again packed up everything we owned and sold all our worldly possessions (not so many things this time around). Then we migrated back to the US to handle this just trusting we would discover all the right solutions along the way.
Maybe like us you have felt the fear of facing your medical challenges with less than adequate resources?
You will find that the most amazing resources are available if you really look for them.
Eric is now receiving his cancer treatment, feeling well and able to enjoy fishing just about every day. We have settled back into life in Florida. Eric is able to avoid the chemo lounge for now due to “specialty pharmacies” and lots of research. He takes his chemo pills at home and things are really pretty good.
We value each and every day more than ever. We now view his cancer as a manageable chronic disease and this perspective has helped us along the way. We have found incredible resources we didn’t imagine existed.
We still hope for a new discovery to cure his cancer but it will have to be backed by science. We have wasted enough time and money on the and “hooey!” I imagine you know what we mean.
The messages still arrive regularly from well meaning friends about “BS natural cures” and our Facebook pages offer the latest “cures” from Mexico and other far flung places with regularity. It is amazing how many of these are promoted blatantly on the Internet every day.
We realize that this probably happens to you also and our compiled research will shed some light on these “too good to be true cures” and save your precious time as you are traveling through your challenging cancer journey. We know how critical it is to take charge of your treatment and communicate with your Doctors and how important it is to research everything.
You have to ask questions, make difficult choices every day, and learn new terminology to find the best answers for your situation. Your situation is different from any other and unique to only you.
We have found answers that will help you. There is power in knowledge and strength in knowing that you are doing the very best you can with your disease and that survival is an option. We have taken charge of our journey and we can help you do the same. Our way of researching can be done by anyone and our bullshit meter is working pretty well now.
I can also now answer the question of when will we finally wake up in the morning and not have Cancer be our very first thought! There were times we weren’t sure that day would ever come.
