Alternative, integrative and complementary what is the difference?
CAM is a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not generally considered part of conventional medicine. Complementary medicine is used together with conventional medicine, and alternative medicine is used in place of conventional medicine.
Integrative medicine combines conventional and CAM treatments for which there is evidence of safety and effectiveness. While scientific evidence exists regarding some CAM therapies, for most there are key questions that are yet to be answered through well-designed scientific studies—questions such as whether these therapies are safe and whether they work for the purposes for which they are used.
Alternative medicine means alternative to conventional treatment
You have heard the hype, tried some interesting methods or may still be thinking, why not? Honestly, there are so many reasons to be careful with alternative “cures”. We understand your desperation at this time and have weeded through these possibilities also. But here is the deal. None of these have been proven to work. Although in defense of alternatives some are still being studied for efficacy.
Proof needs to come from scientific studies which have been properly conducted by qualified researchers. The proof is not in gathering a few people together who will testify that their cancer was cured with non-medical approaches.
Let’s say for example a good friend swears that using apricot pits cured his father’s cancer. You want to believe him. But if that were true don’t you think the pharmaceutical companies would be researching that so they could patent it and sell it? you know your friend believes it to be true. But is there any chance that these alternative “cures” could cause harm? Yes, of course, there is.
Now it probably won’t hurt to use some complementary therapies along with standard treatment but alternative typically means in lieu of medical care and this often means delaying or not pursuing medical care. As we know with cancer, time is of the essence.
You really don’t want to take medical advice from well-meaning friends or random people who are trying to sell you something as an alternative to real medical care. Many studies have been done which disproves the success of many of these alternatives, some are being studied right now and some simply rely on our gullibility and our faith in human nature and aren’t even reasonable ideas let alone proven cures.
Here are some of the most popular alternative therapies for Cancer
The Gerson Therapy and Juicing
The Budwig Protocol
Proteolytic Enzyme Therapy. …
Vitamin C Chelation
Marijuana or cannabis oil
These are but a few examples and new alternative approaches are being promoted every day. To make matters worse since alternatives to real science-based medicine are so very popular now that even some major institutions that have been known for their medical expertise have begun to offer some integrative/alternative approaches.
Do you find it distressing that these well-known colleges and medical facilities are offering and profiting from these approaches which have no scientific basis? I sure do! They are simply responding to public demand, giving the patients what they are looking for in spite of the lack of science.
Once again the profit motive seems to outweigh real science. A very sad trend and one that practically ensures many people will increasingly use alternatives to science-based medicine as their main approach to treat cancer.
